Poker Night at the Inventory
Platform: PC Publisher: Telltale Games US Price: $5
Get out your smoker jacket and poker face as Telltale Games invites you to try your hand at it’s newest poker sim. At the table with wads of cash is Team Fortress 2’s Heavy, Strong Bad of HomeStarRunner.net, Max of the Freelance Police, and Tycho of Penny Arcade
The setting is a Dick Tracy-esque club that’s dimly lit and holds the night’s losers at a dusty bar.
Released in November 2010 through Steam, it’s a very inexpensive game at $5.00, and is worth the investment if you’re looking for wise-cracks and bad beats. As with most poker games I have played in the past, the action can be very slow in comparison with free online poker sites. It can be sped up through game options, which then it turns into a very average game as you are missing out on the commentary and tomfoolery.
OPPONENTS
Each opponent has a unique playing style, which can be used to your advantage or disadvantage. Max is the best player from my experience but will go on tilt after you win some chips from him. You will find that Strong Bad is very loose with his chips and will play almost every hand. Try not to bluff The Heavy as he will call you with anything (He called my all in with Queen High and won). Tycho is usually the first or second knocked out as he calls min bets and raises quickly.
GAMEPLAY
As stated before you can turn down the chit chat and just play poker, also you can enable the mature talk to hear swearing at the table otherwise it’s censored. Graphics are smooth and the game runs very well. Limited options as far as graphic detail but supports high resolutions and anti-aliasing. Game would easily run on high with any dual-core cpu and a 8 Series Nvidia GPU or 3000 Series ATI Card.
OVERALL
I’d rate this a solid 6/10, mainly loses points due to lack of depth. That being said there are unlockable features, but to me poker is poker. I don’t regret spending the $5.00 as it loads quick and can be enjoyable when I don’t have time to get engulfed into a game.
